Resolving Loyalty Conflicts

Professional Ethics Codes prescribe that the health care professional first try to resolve the conflict. For example, a doctor explains the problem to his or her superior and works out an alternative that does not compromise ethical practice.

Give an example of dealing with a dual loyalty conflict by addressing it with the patient.

Prison example: A doctor explains at the initial consultation that security concerns limit confidentiality and he must report information from the prisoner/patient about hidden weapons.

Private practice example: At the start of treatment a psychotherapist explains how insurance reporting may affect confidentiality and discusses options.
